Duane Cyrus’ contemporary dance classes access a cross section of movement styles as reference points for the diverse dance training required for today’s concert dance performer. Offered at different levels, from beginning through advanced, these classes incorporate the following five aspects:
ß Polycentric and polyrhythmic movement (African, Afro-Caribbean, and African-American aesthetics in movement and musicality)
ß Clarity of line and specificity of shape (a balletic concept applied to different movement structures)
ß Wide range of dynamic choices within movement execution (a modern dance concept)
ß Attention to somatic theory and anatomical motivation for movements as a support for performance (healthy movement practice)
ß Critical thinking for the dancer that supports an integrated body and mind intelligence.
Cyrus’ movement background is informed by modern dance (Graham), ballet (Vaganova), and jazz (Fred Benjamin and Alfred Gallman.) Classes can be structured to focus with greater intensity on any combination of these styles. All classes are conducted within a setting that encourages a full range of theatrical expression for the dancer.
Accessing the Theatre of Movement
This course explores the connectivity between the two disciplines of Dance and Theatre. Accessing the Theatre of Movement investigates the theatrical power of movement for the dancer as well as the importance of a physical vitality for the actor. This course will seek to develop a stronger theatrical stage presence for the dancer and an enhanced physical truthfulness for the actor by utilizing theatre and dance improvisation, as well as noted theories on movement, theatrical expression, and creativity. Accessing the Theatre of Movement approaches theatrical motivation from a movement perspective. Class exercises and assignments will involve:
- Theatre Games/Improvisation
- Dance and Movement Improvisation
- Scene Study/Analysis of Choreography
- Focus on Creative Collaboration
This class is useful to students interested in a more complete integration of the different performative elements of theatre and dance. Actors, dancers and even those just interested in accessing a more integrated expressive presence are encouraged to attend.
DENISE POSNAK’S CLASSES:
Pilates
Based on the traditional methods of Joseph H. Pilates work and influenced by somatic techniques, Denise Posnak’s Pilates class focuses on building strength in the core muscles of the torso while lengthening and increasing mobility in the spine and limbs. The 45 minute class is comprised of slow, concentrated mat work that emphasizes deep muscular action, precision in movement, and directed concentration. A balance of strength, stretch and control is the goal of this class.
Composition
In composition class, the student will create dance material from improvisational structures and then shape this material through formalist principles. Focusing on the ways in which one can get to know their choreography through putting it through various “machines” – including time, space and audience “machines”, the student will be encouraged to develop both an intimate and objective relationship to their work. Outside class assignments will augment the in-class investigations.
Modern Technique
The focus of Rebecca Enghauser’s Modern Technique class is on honing subtle and expansive movement skills and artistry within the modern dance medium. It will favor the use of rhythm and momentum to incite movement in a challengingly expansive kinesphere.
Ecosomatics
Ecosomatics will draw on a cross-disciplinary smattering of ecology, ecopsychology as well as movement, improvisation, and somatic reflection/ exploration to discover the power behind ecological perceptions and somatic sensitization when they are juxtaposed. Students of all ages, movement levels and experiences are welcome and should come ready to move, rest, write, and even go outdoors for inspiration
